A very recent tweet said “if i ever called you jobless, I’m sorry. Finding a job isn’t easy.” Lack of employment is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it was discovered that 58.9% of HND graduates are unemployed, 49.55% of OND graduates are unemployed and 39.75% of BSc holders are unemployed. This means that hundreds of thousands of people are unemployed even after going to school. Despite that there are actually not enough jobs, some people have two or more jobs so why haven’t you been able to get one? It might be your fault. Here  are six reasons you have not gotten your dream job.

NO JOB HUNTING STRATEGY AND CONSISTENCY

In order to get a job, it is important to have a strategy and be consistent. You should answer questions like “what kind of job do I want?” “If I don’t get this job role, what are some alternative roles I can take on?” After answering these questions, you need to think of places where you can get the kind of job you are looking for. Then also ask yourself important steps that you can take to get the job you want. Having a strategy means that you are not searching in the dark, but are pursuing your goal with full awareness and control. As well as having a job-hunting strategy, you also need to work to apply it consistently. That means that every day, week or fortnight you repeat the same steps, over and over again. Only then does your strategy have a chance of working.

TERRIBLE CV

Your CV and cover letter might be poorly written, have a terrible layout and or it may not be customised to suit the specific job role.  Many many people out there have just one CV that they use to apply for all different kinds of jobs. It is not enough to customise only the cover letter for each role but leave the CV exactly the same. That’s a missed opportunity!

YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT UP TO DATE.

It is very important for your social media profiles to show what you do, especially Linked-in. Your online presence is very important to your job-hunting success. Make sure that your profile/bio is complete and attractive, your photo professional and your summary appealing. You will then appear higher up in the social media search results and contribute positively to your online brand.

LACK OF NETWORKING SKILLS

Networking involves the process of meeting new individuals who have the potential to become your customers. Your social media profile serves a greater purpose than being a digital resume; it can be a valuable tool for establishing connections. Actively participate in online groups, contribute to discussions, and even initiate conversations to enhance your visibility. Share your professional activities online and demonstrate your expertise.

While networking online is beneficial, it is equally important to engage in face-to-face interactions, even if it feels intimidating, especially for newcomers to a country or those lacking confidence in their language skills. Building relationships is a gradual process, starting with people getting to know you, liking you, and trusting you before considering your services. Attend various networking events and gatherings, and don’t forget to follow up. Schedule meetings, coffee sessions, and lunches to strengthen your connections. This proactive approach yields positive results in networking efforts.

LACK OF NECESSARY JOB SKILLS FOR DESIRED JOB ROLE

At times, your own lack of skills may be the obstacle preventing you from securing a job, rather than any fault of the employer. Therefore, during your job search, it’s crucial not to remain idle. Instead, consider enrolling in courses to enhance your skills. Fortunately, there are a plethora of free courses available online. Engage in these courses, practice the skills you acquire, and develop tangible samples of your work that you can proudly showcase to potential employers.

YOU DON’T HAVE A POSITIVE MINDSET

When it comes to job hunting, maintaining a positive outlook is paramount. The search for employment can often be discouraging and arduous. However, it’s crucial to remind yourself that this phase is temporary and that eventually, you will secure a position. Cultivating a positive mindset can greatly aid you in navigating this journey. One effective strategy is to create an empowering statement, akin to a mantra, that you recite to yourself regularly as a form of affirmation. This practice helps bolster your optimism and resilience throughout the job-seeking process.
