The iPhone XR has always had a loyal fanbase, it was reliable, stylish, and got the job done. But as newer models rolled out with flashier features, XR users started feeling a little left behind. If you’ve ever had someone glance at your phone and ask, “You’re still using the XR?”—don’t worry, your moment has arrived. (RIP to those still using older models, though… that’s if such people even still exist.)
Introducing the iPhone 16e, a familiar favorite with a fresh identity. Apple has given it a well-deserved refresh, complete with better performance, an upgraded camera, and, of course, a USB-C port.

If the 16e looks familiar, that’s because it sticks closely to the XR’s beloved design. Apple clearly isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here, but rather, giving XR users a reason to upgrade without feeling like they’re jumping into something completely new.
- 6.1-inch display? Still here.
- Aluminum frame? Classic.
- Single rear camera? Yep, but with a major improvement.
While the overall look remains the same, the feel is definitely different. It’s lighter, smoother, and finally fits into Apple’s modern ecosystem without looking like a relic from the past. The edges are slightly more refined, and the materials feel just a bit more premium; subtle tweaks, but ones that make a difference.
But while Apple users celebrate this ‘new’ model, the iPhone vs. Android debate is already in full force again. Android users are rolling their eyes because, let’s be honest, USB-C has been around on Android phones for nearly a decade now. And a 48MP camera? That’s something mid-range Androids have had for years. For every iPhone user hyping up the 16e as “revolutionary”, there’s an Android user somewhere asking, “So you guys are just catching up now?”

And then there’s the bigger question—affordability.
For many young Nigerians, the dream of owning an iPhone is as much about branding as it is about functionality. Apple products hold a certain prestige, whether it’s the seamless ecosystem or the perceived social status that comes with carrying an iPhone. But in an economy where the exchange rate keeps rising and salaries aren’t increasing to match, is the 16e really worth it?
The XR was a fan favorite because it was one of the more “affordable” iPhones of its time. But even then, most Nigerians had to buy it second-hand or use installment plans. Now, with the 16e positioned as a budget-friendly version of the iPhone 16 lineup, will it be truly affordable, or will it still cost a small fortune?
While Apple hasn’t officially announced Nigerian pricing, based on global trends, the 16e will still likely be in the six-figure range. And in a country where the average monthly income doesn’t match the price of the latest smartphones, the question becomes: is buying an iPhone about functionality, or is it simply about keeping up appearances?

To be honest, if you walk into certain spaces with an older iPhone, people will look at you funny. The XR users already know this. The side-eye, the smirk, the occasional “oh, your iPhone has only one camera”—people are ruthless. But now, with the 16e, you can finally escape the ridicule… for a little while.
Still, for the same amount of money, you could get a high-end Android phone with a 120Hz display, better battery life, and features Apple is just now introducing. It’s the eternal struggle—buy into the Apple ecosystem for status and ecosystem compatibility, or go for an Android with better specs and affordability?
At the end of the day, the iPhone 16e isn’t really about innovation—it’s about familiarity. Apple is giving it’s users a worthy upgrade without forcing them to learn something new. If you’re someone who just wants an iPhone that’s up to date but doesn’t want to splurge on a Pro model, this might be for you. It’s faster, sharper, and has finally caught up to Android in some ways.
