Introduction: A Misunderstood Generation

Gen Z, we are the generation currently under attack. I think it’s a turn by turn thing, the generation before us—millennials had their fair share. As Gen Z, we’ve garnered a reputation that is both controversial and polarizing. We are accused of a plethora of sins: being glued to our screens, obsessed with social media clout, and having the attention span of a goldfish.

But, like, let’s dig deeper, shall we? Let’s find out if I can convince you that we are simply misunderstood and misinterpreted and… it’s not giving.

Gen Z Digital Darlings or Screen Zombies?

Gen Z—the first generation to be fully immersed in the digital age from birth. Yes, we were practically born with smartphones in our hands. Our cradle songs were the pings of notifications. To older folks, it appears we are always lost in a digital daze, scrolling mindlessly. But, behind those screens, we’re digital maestros, orchestrating movements, starting trends, and creating content that connects millions across the planet.

Gen Z

According to the Global Web Index, 98% of Gen Z in Nigeria use a smartphone, demonstrating our digital proficiency. The irony of it all is that while we’re criticized for our screen time, it’s through those screens that we’re shaping the future.

Gen Z Socially Savvy or Annoyingly Aware?

Gen Z—we are labeled as the preachy, hyper-aware activists who never shut up about societal ills and issues. To some, our incessant advocacy is irritating, like a fly that won’t let you be. But, we really, we’re just trying to save the world a tweet at a time. Our activism isn’t just a trend, it’s a testament to our collective consciousness.

According to a Deloitte survey, 62% of Gen Z participants identified climate change and protecting the environment as their top concern. The same platforms accused of numbing our minds are the battlegrounds where we fight for a better tomorrow.

Work Wizards or Lazy Slackers?

The workplace is where we’re often misunderstood. Some say we’ve shattered the sacred 9-to-5, opting for flexibility, remote work, and the gig economy. To them, we might seem like lazy slackers who refuse to climb the corporate ladder. But here’s the twist: we’re not lazy; we’re redefining what work means.

Gen Z

As a Gen Z working a 9-to-5, I see the value in traditional work structures while also appreciating flexibility. A report by Upwork found that Gen Z freelancing increased from 53% in 2019 to 67% in 2020, reflecting our embrace of diverse work arrangements. We’re choosing balance, mental health, and meaningful work, whether it’s within the 9-to-5 framework or beyond. We might be working in ways that seem unconventional, but we’re hustling and contributing in ways that make sense for us and our future.

Gen Z Communication Chaos or Linguistic Legends?

And oh, our communication skills. We’re masters of memes, emoji enthusiasts, and slang slingers. To the untrained eye, our texts might look like hieroglyphics. Our preference for passive voice and alliteration is seen as the death knell of proper grammar. But, let’s be real—language evolves. We’re just ahead of the curve, blending humor and brevity to convey complex ideas. According to a survey by YPulse, 69% of Gen Z believe that social media allows them to communicate in new and innovative ways, showing how our digital dialect is a natural evolution in the age of instant communication.

Annoying or Astounding?

So, are we annoying? Maybe. But, we’re also audaciously ambitious. We’re the generation that’s taking the old, tired ways and turning them upside down. We’re not just annoying; we’re astounding. We’re reshaping society with our digital dexterity, social savviness, work wizardry, and communication chaos. We might be misunderstood, but we’re also unstoppable.

But let’s be real—did you actually think I was going to try and convince you to love the IT generation? Nah. We’re too busy rewriting the rules to worry about that. Whether we’re grinding away at a 9-to-5 or freelancing from a beach somewhere, we’re making our mark in ways you’ve never seen before.
