Herbert Wigwe made a lasting impact on the world. Just moments ago, he shone with passion and ambition, unveiling his vision to turn his university into a beacon of excellence for Africa.
Wigwe was a famous Nigerian banker and entrepreneur. Also, he was highly respected as the Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s top five banks.
Since Wigwe joined Access Bank in 2002, he worked hard to bring innovation and growth. Furthermore, his dedication led to his promotion to Managing Director and CEO in 2014. Also, Wigwe’s legacy is marked by four key actions. These actions ensure that his influence in Nigeria will always be remembered.
UNICEF, Access Bank, and Herbert Wigwe Collaboration
Wigwe, Access Bank, and UNICEF worked together to support vulnerable children, orphans, and displaced people in Nigeria.
The bank hosts the annual Access Bank/UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Competition to raise awareness for this important cause. After Herbert became CEO in 2014, they began making an annual donation of 10 million Naira. Also, Herbert was deeply committed to this cause. He and Access Bank always looked for new ways to combine their resources to help children in need.
H.O.W Foundation
In 2016, Herbert Wigwe founded The H.O.W Foundation. H.O.W stands for Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe. The foundation’s main goal is to help Africa grow, one person, one community, and one future at a time.
Herbert saw troubling data about Nigeria and decided to make a difference. Also, he learned about the number of children not in school, the high unemployment among youth, and the poor healthcare system. Thus, these issues motivated him to create a vision focused on improving education, health, and youth empowerment across Africa.
Herbert’s Battle Against AIDS
In February 2017, Herbert Wigwe became co-chair of the Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS (NIBUCAA). This group of private organizations works to support the government’s fight against HIV/AIDS.
NIBUCAA’s mission is to provide access to HIV counselling, testing, and support for the corporate workforce and all Nigerians. Also, they use private sector resources to assist the government in controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS and reducing its impact on communities.
As of February 2022, only 1.6 million Nigerians were receiving treatment for HIV out of about 1.9 million living with the virus. With the help of Access Bank, NIBUCAA supported around 300 people with HIV. They also conducted community-based activities to offer vital education and stop the virus from spreading.
Herbert’s Passion for Education
Herbert Wigwe created Wigwe University to realize his vision for changing Africa’s future. Scheduled to open in September 2024. Also, this private institution aims to develop bold and innovative leaders who can unlock Nigeria’s and Africa’s potential.
Located in Isiokpo, Rivers State, Herbert hoped this university would become a world-class center for education. He planned to offer a curriculum that was both globally and locally relevant. Experts would staff the university and use the latest teaching methods.
Herbert Wigwe: A Legacy That Lives On
Herbert Wigwe may no longer be with us, but his legacy endures. Therefore, his contributions to Nigeria and Africa continue to inspire and shape the future. Also, we will always remember his remarkable impact.
