For Nigerian music fans, 2024 has been a year filled with chart-topping hits, surprise collaborations, and now, a heated split between rising star Shallipopi and his record label, Dapper Music. Rumours have been swirling that Shallipopi’s recent actions — from removing Dapper Music’s name from his social media bio to unfollowing the label’s CEO, Damilola Akinwunmi — signal an end to their successful partnership.

Although neither party has officially confirmed the split, Shallipopi’s sudden distancing from Dapper Music has sparked questions, and it appears he may be following in the footsteps of other notable Nigerian artists who have parted ways with their labels on rocky terms.

When Shallipopi first emerged in the Nigerian music industry, his unique style and infectious energy quickly gained attention. Backed by Dapper Music, Shallipopi saw an impressive rise, debuting with Planet Pluto, an EP that cemented his place in the industry.

His full-length album, Presido La Pluto, followed, along with his sophomore album Shakespopi, which produced hits like the chart-topping “ASAP.” Under Dapper’s management, Shallipopi evolved from a rising talent into a household name in Nigerian street music, and the label reaped the rewards of this association.

However, as Shallipopi’s popularity skyrocketed, so did his ambitions. Earlier in the year, the rapper took steps to establish his record label, Plutomania Records, featuring Zerry DL and Tega Boi as new artists. His new label hinted at creative independence and a long-term vision that may not have fully aligned with Dapper Music’s objectives.

Fast forward to October, Shallipopi released a new single, “Order” with Olamide, under both Dapper Music and Plutomania, showing signs of a partnership that may have started to strain.

Shallipopi’s rumoured departure from Dapper Music mirrors a trend in Nigeria’s music industry where artists and labels frequently clash over creative differences, financial disagreements, and control over intellectual property.

Seyi Vibez, another artist who recently left Dapper Music, faced a similar situation earlier this year. The move left fans speculating that Dapper’s management style might not be compatible with artists who want more control over their work and careers.

Many fans will remember Wizkid’s controversial split from EME (Empire Mates Entertainment) back in 2013. Initially, EME had pushed Wizkid to stardom, nurturing his talent and providing a platform for his breakout hits. However, as Wizkid’s fame grew, so did his desire for autonomy. Citing contract disagreements and creative restrictions, Wizkid eventually left EME and established his label, Starboy Records. Though the split was controversial, it allowed him to secure his legacy and become a global icon, showing that sometimes a split can lead to even greater success.

Then there’s the infamous feud between Kizz Daniel (then known as Kiss Daniel) and his former label, G-Worldwide. He was signed to the label in 2013, and became a sensation under G-Worldwide, releasing hits like “Woju” and “Laye.”

However, by 2017, he was caught in a legal battle with the label over contract restrictions that allegedly prevented him from collaborating with other artists and exploring his musical potential. His departure led to a messy court case, but he eventually launched Flyboy Inc., his record label, and continued to thrive.

For Shallipopi, much like Wizkid and Kizz Daniel, the desire for creative freedom and control over his brand may be at the core of his rift with Dapper Music. When artists gain fame, they often feel restricted by contracts signed early in their careers, which were made with a different vision in mind. These contracts can limit their opportunities to explore other creative avenues or secure better financial returns on their work.

Moreover, many Nigerian artists have taken to establishing their labels as a solution. By owning their intellectual property, they gain a larger share of revenue, influence over their image, and flexibility in collaborations. Plutomania Records, Shallipopi’s new venture, appears to be his attempt at taking control of his brand and supporting up-and-coming artists who may not want to deal with the restrictions that he faced.

Shallipopi’s rumoured departure from Dapper Music is the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of artist-label splits in Nigeria. Fans have seen this story unfold repeatedly, with familiar plotlines of financial disputes, creative differences, and public displays of discontent. As Nigeria’s music industry evolves, more artists are likely to seek independence and creative freedom, while labels will continue to wrestle with the challenge of retaining talent without stifling ambition.

For now, Shallipopi’s fans eagerly await confirmation of his next steps, knowing that this latest split is not just the end of one chapter but potentially the beginning of an exciting new era for the artist and his new venture, Plutomania Records.
