If only people still had their humanity, maybe Adetunji ‘TeeJay’ Opayele would still be alive today. Maybe someone would have rushed to his side, quickly transported him to the hospital, and done everything possible to save him. But instead, on the night of March 4, 2025, as he lay unconscious on the road after a tragic accident, the person responsible for the crash stayed in her car, unwilling to help. And now, rather than facing the full weight of justice, she walks free.
A petition demanding accountability for the Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Bumpa has gained over 25,000 signatures on change.org, urging the Lagos State Government to take action.
According to Techpoint Africa, TeeJay lost his life on March 5, 2025, after being involved in a devastating collision. The petition, initiated by ‘Teejay Legacy,’ details the horrifying events of that night and the alleged role of Biola Adams-Odutayo in both the accident and its aftermath.
The petition states that at around 10:20 p.m., TeeJay was riding his power bike along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, heading home from the gym.
“He had the right of way when Miss Biola Adams-Odutayo, driving a vehicle with licence number LND 418 JR, merged onto the express way without considering approaching traffic, thereby crashing into him,” the petition reads in part.
Adams-Odutayo had reportedly just finished dinner and was driving herself while instructing her driver to follow behind in her friend’s car. Despite being fully equipped with safety gear, TeeJay was thrown onto the road, unconscious and fighting for his life.
But what followed was even more disturbing than the accident itself. Adams-Odutayo allegedly refused to step out of her vehicle. Onlookers pleaded with her to help, but she ignored them. And when her friend was asked to intervene, the response was as chilling as it was heartless:
“She doesn’t want blood to stain her car.”
The petition further states, “As Teejay lay unconscious but still breathing, Biola, a healthcare professional and Head of Health at a reputable insurance broking firm, chose to stay on a phone call for over 30 minutes instead of helping save a life.”
When help finally came, it was strangers—not the woman who hit him—who took action. They rushed TeeJay to the hospital, clinging to hope that he would survive. But in the early hours of March 5, 2025, that hope was shattered.
As TeeJay’s loved ones grieved, Adams-Odutayo reportedly walked into the same hospital, not to check on the man she had just hit, but to request a drip, claiming she was in shock. Then, she allegedly tried to flee.
But the injustice didn’t stop there. The petition accuses Adams-Odutayo and her family of using wealth and connections to avoid true accountability. Rather than facing manslaughter charges, she was reportedly charged only with reckless driving, spent just one night in detention, met her ₦1 million bail immediately, and has since continued with her life as if nothing happened.
Now, the petitioners are demanding that manslaughter charges be filed and that key officials, including the Governor of Osun State, intervene to ensure justice is served. Bumpa Co-founder Kelvin Umechukwu, reflecting on the loss of his friend and business partner, stated, “Though his presence will be missed, we commit to keeping Teejay’s legacy alive.”
Time and time again, the affluent use their wealth and influence to bend the system in their favor, turning what should be a pursuit of justice into a game of connections. When those with power are shielded from consequences, it sends a dangerous message; that life is cheap, and accountability is optional. TeeJay’s case is not the first, and if nothing is done, it won’t be the last. Justice cannot be reserved for only those without influence; it must be fought for, demanded, and upheld, because a life was taken, and silence is not an option.
While we fight for justice, we must also protect ourselves from those who recklessly disregard human life. Lagos roads are notoriously dangerous, plagued by careless driving, poor road conditions, and weak enforcement of traffic laws. Every day, lives are lost to overspeeding, reckless merging, and outright negligence, which are totally avoidable. Pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike must remain vigilant. Defensive driving, obeying traffic signals, and wearing proper safety gear, like TeeJay did, can make a difference. However, no amount of caution can fully guard against those who believe the rules don’t apply to them. This is why stricter enforcement, harsher penalties for reckless driving, and a collective shift toward responsible road use are not just necessary; they are urgent. Justice isn’t only about accountability after a life is lost; it’s about preventing the next tragedy before it happens.
