How much longer can the Super Eagles’ World Cup dreams survive on life support? What is the opposite of a dream team, because that is what the Super Eagles are becoming? Can the team perform any more underwhelmingly, or is this the new standard? What else could go wrong for the Super Eagles besides everything? Don’t call me a serial questioner, I am genuinely disappointed, in the truest sense of the word.
The Nigerian national football team, fondly known as the Super Eagles, has once again left fans in a state of utter disbelief and disappointment. Despite high hopes and promises of a turnaround, the team’s recent performance has been nothing short of abysmal. The latest defeat at the hands of Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers has left many wondering if the team has hit rock bottom.

The Super Eagles’ woes began with a lackluster display in their opening match against Lesotho, which ended in a goalless draw. Many blamed rustiness and the team’s inability to gel under new coach Finidi George. However, as the matches progressed, it became clear that the problems ran much deeper.
On June 10, 2024, Nigeria faced Benin Republic in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, for their fourth match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Benin Republic dominated the Super Eagles, winning 2-1 and moving to the top of Group C. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles remain in fifth place.

The Super Eagles face the group leaders, Lesotho, next. Consequently, anything less than a win could end their World Cup dreams. So far, the team has gone four matches without a victory, scoring only three goals. Meanwhile, opponents have breached their defense four times, leaving their goal difference at a paltry -1. In short, the team looks disorganized and struggling.
But what went wrong? Several factors contribute. First, the team has prepared poorly for the qualifiers. Moreover, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) faces a leadership crisis, with president Amaju Pinnick under allegations of corruption and mismanagement. As a result, the team has lost focus and direction.
Second, coach Finidi George’s tactics and team selection face scrutiny. He fails to field a consistent starting lineup, which in turn creates confusion and disrupts cohesion on the pitch.

Lastly, the players must take full responsibility for their performances. The Super Eagles boast a talented squad, and the players compete in top leagues across Europe. Yet, they disappoint fans by failing to carry their club form into national team matches.
As the Super Eagles fight to qualify for the World Cup, fans question what the future holds. Will the team turn things around, or will it keep underperforming? One thing is certain: everyone must act fast. The NFF must organize efficiently, coach Finidi George must motivate the players, and the players must deliver on the pitch.
The Super Eagles’ struggles serve as a wake-up call for Nigerian football. The team must regroup, refocus, and chase a single goal: World Cup qualification. Until they do, the Super Eagles will keep reaching new heights of disappointment.
