Nigeria

Has Nigeria’s identity been reduced to a mere refrain of tired lyrics of yesteryear? Are Nigerians eclipsed in nostalgia or forging the future with the old and rugged tools? Have the citizens now taken delight in the uniforms of the past that they consistently showcase their feebleness before the world? Is this change a fiscal red herring or indeed a unifying force? These and many more questions plague the minds of Nigerians as they grapple with the reality.

Flowing from the above, Nigeria, which is beset by myriad economic and political challenges, has recently enacted a significant modification to its national anthem. The decision to revert to the erstwhile anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” has precipitated a vociferous debate among citizens. While some applaud the change, others castigate its relevance and timing. As the country grapples with fiscal instability, insecurity, and political turbulence, one wonders if altering the national anthem constitutes a judicious allocation of resources.

Accordingly, the old anthem used from 1960 to 1978 evokes nostalgia and pride for some. Supporters argue it reflects past economic prosperity and political harmony. They believe its revival would inspire unity and patriotism. The anthem’s focus on cohesion, peace, and progress reminds a divided country of its potential.

Conversely, detractors view the change as a retrograde step, disconnected from the nation’s contemporary realities. They contend that reviving an obsolete anthem does not address the pressing issues afflicting Nigeria, including a burgeoning fiscal deficit, crippling inflation, and political instability. The country’s economic malaise and political fragility demand concrete solutions, not symbolic gestures.

Furthermore, critics decry the opaque process of changing the anthem, citing a lack of public consultation and participatory democracy. The National Assembly’s expeditious passage of the National Anthem Bill 2024, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, raises concerns about democratic accountability and representation. Did the government genuinely engage with citizens, or was this decision imposed through executive fiat?

The anthem’s lyrics and message also warrant scrutiny. While “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” extols national unity and peace, some argue that it neglects the nation’s diversity and complexity. The erstwhile anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” introduced in 1978, acknowledged the country’s struggles and called for collective action. Its removal has sparked fears that the government is downplaying the nation’s challenges and ignoring the need for collective effort.

Nigeria’s anthem debate raises fundamental questions about national identity, unity, and economic development. Can a change in the national anthem genuinely inspire unity and patriotism, or is it a cosmetic fix for deeper structural issues? Does the government’s focus on symbolic changes divert attention from addressing the nation’s pressing economic and political problems?

Again, in a country facing fiscal hardship, insecurity, and political instability, citizens crave real solutions, not symbols. The government must focus on solving pressing issues, engaging citizens in meaningful dialogue, and building unity and purpose. A national anthem, old or new, inspires only when it reflects the nation’s shared values and hopes.

Nigeria’s anthem debate serves as a microcosm for the nation’s broader economic and political struggles. While symbols and national identity matter, they must not overshadow the need for concrete action and citizen engagement. As Nigeria goes through its complex challenges, the government and citizens must work together to create a brighter economic and political future, rather than relying solely on nostalgic rehashes or symbolic changes.
