In secondary school, during my days, there was a programme known as the ‘Young Farmers Club,’ designed to prepare youths for a future in agriculture. We would learn the basics of farming, from planting seeds to understanding soil nutrients. At the time, it seemed like just another extracurricular activity. Looking back, it was a visionary attempt to inspire youth participation in a vital sector. Today, I doubt if that club still exists. Even if it does, how many schools take it seriously? Yet, the need to engage young people in agriculture has never been more critical.
Agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. It contributes significantly to GDP and provides livelihoods for millions. Globally, the agricultural sector is worth trillions of dollars. Nigeria’s share could grow exponentially if we inspire young people to see agriculture as the future. Unfortunately, many young Nigerians see agriculture as a last resort—a career for the unambitious. This perception is far from the truth, and we must change it.

Agriculture today is not what it used to be. Modern farming combines technology, innovation, and business skills. From using drones and GPS for precision farming to agro-processing ventures, it is a dynamic and lucrative field. How do we convince young Nigerians to see this potential? How do we inspire them to take up the mantle and secure agriculture’s future?
The first step is education. When I think of the Young Farmers Club, I realise it was more than just an activity; it planted knowledge in young minds. Imagine reviving such clubs with a modern twist—lessons on agribusiness, digital tools, and climate-smart practices. Picture students visiting thriving farms to see that farming isn’t just toiling in the sun. It’s about innovation, problem-solving, and creating value. If young people see agriculture as intellectually stimulating and financially rewarding, their attitudes will shift.
Mentorship is also crucial. When young people have role models, they are more likely to consider a field viable. We need to highlight young Nigerians excelling in agriculture. Many started small—with a backyard farm or poultry business—and grew into something remarkable. Social media can showcase their success stories to inspire others.

Access to funding and resources is another hurdle. Many young Nigerians shy away from agriculture because they believe they lack capital or support. While this is valid, there are numerous opportunities—government grants, private investments, and more. What is missing is awareness and accessibility. Imagine a digital hub where aspiring young farmers find everything they need—business plan templates, loan guides, and market insights. With the right support, entry barriers can be lowered.
Technology also plays a key role. Young people are naturally drawn to technology, and agriculture benefits from it. Apps can predict weather, identify crop diseases, and connect farmers with buyers. Innovations like hydroponics and vertical farming allow food production in urban areas. Integrating technology into agriculture makes it appealing to tech-savvy youths. Imagine every young Nigerian with a smartphone using it to enhance agricultural productivity.

Beyond these steps, there needs to be a mindset shift. Young people must see agriculture as a pathway to wealth creation and national development. Nigeria’s vast arable land, favourable climate, and growing population guarantee a consistent demand for food. The opportunities are endless—crop farming, livestock production, agro-processing, and export. If young Nigerians tap into this potential, they will secure their futures and help solve challenges like unemployment and food insecurity.
I have seen agriculture’s transformative power. In my community, a young man started with a small cassava farm. Over time, he expanded to processing cassava into garri and starch. Today, he employs dozens and supplies markets across the region. His story shows what is possible when determination meets opportunity. Stories like his are not isolated; they are happening all over Nigeria. They can inspire a generation.

We need to make agriculture fashionable. Young people gravitate toward glamorous fields. Imagine campaigns, awards, and endorsements by celebrities elevating agriculture’s status. Let’s celebrate the “agripreneurs” breaking barriers and setting trends. With the right narrative, agriculture can become the top choice for young Nigerians building impactful careers.
Reflecting on the Young Farmers Club fills me with nostalgia and hope. Nostalgia for the simple but powerful lessons we learned and hope for a future where those lessons are revived and expanded. The future of agriculture in Nigeria lies in the hands of its youth. It is up to us to guide, inspire, and equip them with the tools to succeed. Agriculture is not just about planting seeds in soil. It’s about planting ideas, dreams, and ambitions in young minds. When those seeds take root, the harvest will exceed our imaginations.
