The rise and fall of Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, once hailed as a charismatic leader steering British youth away from crime, now unfolds in controversy, with the UK government ordering his deportation amidst serious allegations of misconduct. This decision, rooted in financial mismanagement and exploitation claims, marks a dramatic shift in the narrative surrounding the pastor and his Salvation Proclaimer Ministries Limited (SPAC Nation), an organisation once celebrated for its community outreach.
Founded in 2012, SPAC Nation initially earned accolades for its innovative approach to youth rehabilitation, targeting disenfranchised communities in London. Adegboyega, a Nigerian who overstayed his visitor visa in 2005, positioned the church as a haven for vulnerable youths, with services featuring uplifting messages and flashy displays of wealth. However, the façade of prosperity masked troubling practices, leading to a barrage of complaints from former members and investigations by UK authorities.
Accusations ranged from undue pressure on congregants to donate large sums of money to coercing them into taking loans or selling their blood under the guise of “sacrificial giving.” The church’s operations raised red flags, with financial statements failing to justify exorbitant expenditures, such as £610,000 allocated for rent despite having no permanent base.
In 2022, the UK High Court ordered the closure of SPAC Nation, citing financial mismanagement and a lack of transparency. Adegboyega, however, rebranded the church as Nxtion Family and continued its activities, albeit under scrutiny.
The UK issued Adegboyega’s deportation order after years of legal battles. The tribunal dismissed his ECHR appeal, calling his family life claims exaggerated. Adegboyega said deportation would harm his marriage to a British citizen and disrupt his community projects. The tribunal disagreed, noting the projects could continue without him.
The Home Office’s portrayal of Adegboyega was damning, describing him as a leader who exploited his followers while living lavishly. Evidence from the Charity Commission and former church members painted a picture of a cult-like organisation that manipulated vulnerable individuals for financial gain.
