The UEFA Europa League group stage clash between Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur on 12 December 2024 concluded in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow. The match offered plenty of action, with both sides showcasing their strengths and battling for critical points in their pursuit of progression in Europe’s secondary club competition.
The opening half saw both teams approach the game cautiously, as they sought to impose their styles of play. Rangers, playing at home, looked to utilise the raucous Ibrox atmosphere to their advantage. James Tavernier, the Gers’ captain and a constant source of inspiration, frequently pushed forward to support attacks down the right flank. Meanwhile, Tottenham, under their manager’s guidance, played a possession-based game, attempting to break down Rangers’ defensive lines with patient build-up play.

Despite the tactical manoeuvring, clear-cut chances were few and far between in the first 45 minutes. Tottenham’s Timo Werner showed glimpses of his pace and movement but failed to trouble Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland. On the other end, Rangers’ forwards found it challenging to bypass the Spurs defence, marshalled effectively by Cristian Romero.
The game came to life early in the second half, with Rangers drawing first blood. In the 47th minute, Hamza Igmane latched onto a precise cross from Tavernier to head the ball into the net, sending the home crowd into raptures. The goal was a testament to Rangers’ ability to capitalise on set-piece situations, a hallmark of their European campaigns.
Tottenham, stung by the setback, responded with urgency. Managerial changes saw Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke introduced, both of whom made an immediate impact. Spurs’ equaliser came in the 75th minute when Kulusevski coolly slotted the ball past Butland after a well-timed pass from Solanke. The Swedish international’s composure and clinical finishing highlighted why he is regarded as one of Tottenham’s most reliable attacking options.

James Tavernier was undoubtedly Rangers’ standout performer, with his assist and relentless energy setting the tone for his side. In defence, the partnership of Ben Davies and Radu Drăgușin ensured that Spurs’ attacks were often thwarted before they could develop.
For Tottenham, Kulusevski’s introduction proved to be a game-changer. His ability to find pockets of space and deliver decisive moments was a constant threat to the Rangers backline. Dominic Solanke also impressed, not only for his assist but for his work rate and link-up play.
While Rangers opened the scoring, Tottenham dominated possession, holding 59% of the ball compared to Rangers’ 41%. Spurs also completed more passes (568 to Rangers’ 383) with a higher accuracy rate. However, Rangers matched their opponents in grit, recording an equal number of corners (7 each) and creating six shots on target compared to Tottenham’s three. The hosts’ defensive organisation was evident, with Jack Butland making crucial saves to keep his team in the contest.

The result leaves both Rangers and Tottenham with mixed emotions. For Rangers, the draw represents a missed opportunity to secure a vital home victory. However, their ability to compete against a Premier League giant will give them confidence as they aim to progress from the group stage.
For Tottenham, the draw adds to their frustrations in a campaign that has seen them struggle for consistency. Although they avoided defeat, Spurs’ inability to secure three points highlights areas for improvement, particularly in converting possession into goals.
Rangers will turn their focus to domestic commitments, aiming to build on the positives from this European encounter. Managerial adjustments and tactical refinements may be required to ensure their continued competitiveness in the Europa League.

Tottenham, on the other hand, will be eyeing a return to winning ways. The performance of their substitutes offers hope for greater squad depth, which could prove crucial in the latter stages of the competition. Managerial decisions and player form will undoubtedly be scrutinised as they aim to fulfil their European ambitions.
The 1-1 stalemate between Rangers and Tottenham was a fair reflection of the contest, with both sides delivering moments of quality and resilience. While neither team emerged as outright winners, the encounter showcased the unpredictability and drama that make the Europa League a compelling competition. Fans of both clubs will undoubtedly look forward to more memorable nights as the tournament progresses.
