Every June, the world lights up with rainbow colors everywhere you look, from social media to music, Pride Month takes center stage. This time is dedicated to celebrating and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. What started out big in Western countries has slowly made its way to Nigerian youth, mostly through the power of social media and online conversations. It’s a movement that’s creating new conversations and changing how many people see identity and acceptance.
In this moment, it’s good to pause and really reflect, to ask what we’re embracing and what we might neglect. What values do we hold, and what’s the true cost?
A Time for Reflection, not Imitation
Nigeria is a nation that upholds tradition, family values, and religious beliefs. These are pillars that have sustained our communities for generations. Respect for elders, preservation of family structures, and moral discipline still makes us who we are. In contrast, the values promoted during Pride Month often challenge these foundations.
It is no secret that a growing number of Nigerian youths are now openly identifying as or supporting individuals who are gay and lesbian. For many, this shift appears exciting, trendy, or even empowering. Yet beneath the surface lies a serious question of identity and influence. Are we truly thinking for ourselves, or are we merely echoing what we see online?
Social media has made global ideologies more accessible than ever before. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter are filled with content that normalizes and promotes LGBTQ+ lifestyles. This content is often packaged in humor, fashion, music, and self-expression. Over time, repetition makes it feel acceptable or even admirable. But should popularity be the same as truth?
There is a reason our ancestors held strong family values. There is a reason our faiths, whether Christianity, Islam, or traditional African beliefs emphasize moral discipline. These values are not there to restrict us; they are there to protect us. In a world full of shifting standards and fleeting trends, they give us a compass to stay grounded.
You know, freedom isn’t just doing whatever you feel like. It’s actually about knowing when to make the right call, even if it’s not the popular move. Nigerian youth are seeing all kinds of stuff from around the world, and yeah, it’s good to be open. But just because something’s trending somewhere else doesn’t mean it fits with who we are.
Our laws don’t back same-sex relationships, and honestly, our cultures and faiths have their own take on it too. It’s more about keeping things balanced. Family means a lot to us, and there’s meaning in how we see relationships and roles. When that balance shifts, things get shaky.
Everyone deserves respect, no doubt. You can respect someone without having to agree with everything they believe or do. We should be able to talk about these things openly, especially since young people are figuring out their own paths in this fast-moving world.
Young people are the future, the leaders, the parents, the teachers. If there’s confusion about love and identity, it makes the future feel uncertain. So yeah, conversations like these aren’t about throwing shade, they’re about helping each other understand better.
Our ancestors valued strong families for a reason. Whether it’s Christianity, Islam, or traditional beliefs, there’s wisdom there about discipline and purpose. These values aren’t cages. They’re guides to help us stay grounded when everything else is changing.
It’s cool to question things and see what works for us. When you see a trend or movement, ask yourself: does this help us build stronger families and communities? Or is it just noise from somewhere else?
Pride Month is a big deal worldwide and means a lot to many people. But Nigerian youth don’t need to jump on every bandwagon to know their worth. Your identity is something you build with your values, your purpose, your own story. Stay true to who you are. You don’t need to let outside noise define you or drown out your voice. Let your life reflect what truly matters to you.
Be fully proud of where you come from. Choose clarity over confusion, truth over hype. The world’s got all kinds of celebrations, but not all of them lead to real peace or happiness.
We’re amazed to have you as a member of our community. Your time here means so much to us. Just to let you know, we organise workshops, seminars, and youth engagement programmes.
