The political landscape in Edo State marked a significant shift on November 12, 2024, as Senator Monday Okpebholo assumed office as the new governor, succeeding Godwin Obaseki, whose administration spanned eight years.
The change in leadership comes on the heels of a political journey marked by achievements, challenges, and public anticipation for a new era. A ceremonial event at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City marked the occasion, with prominent figures in attendance, underscoring the significance of the transition.

As Governor Obaseki prepared to leave office, he held a valedictory session in Benin City last Friday, where he dissolved his cabinet, expressing gratitude to his team of Commissioners and Special Advisers.
During this session, he acknowledged the dedication of his executive council and credited their efforts with helping him achieve his vision for a more prosperous Edo State. Obaseki also extended his gratitude to the people of Edo, emphasizing that the successes of his administration were made possible through the collaboration, support, and prayers of the populace over the past eight years.

On the eve of the inauguration, a celebratory football match took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in honor of the incoming governor. This novelty game, held on Sunday, November 10, attracted political dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and celebrities.
Former Super Eagles stars, such as Mutiu Adepoju, Augustine Eguavoen, and Bright Omokaro, along with other local football icons, joined the event. The friendly competition saw “Akpakomiza and Friends” face off against ex-international soccer players, creating a lively atmosphere that mirrored the celebratory mood across the state.
The festivities continued with the swearing-in ceremony, where Okpebholo and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, took their oaths of office shortly before 1:00 pm. The governor-elect received a warm welcome from supporters and well-wishers, waving to a cheering crowd as he took a ceremonial ride around the stadium in an open vehicle.
The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (chair of the governors’ forum), and governors from various APC states, demonstrating a powerful display of unity and support within the party.

Okpebholo’s victory in the election, where he garnered 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, who received 247,274 votes, affirmed the public’s endorsement of his leadership. With such a strong mandate, Okpebholo enters office amid high expectations, as citizens anticipate the fulfillment of campaign promises and a continuation of the progress seen under Obaseki’s administration.
The transition team of the All Progressives Congress (APC) played a key role in shaping the incoming administration’s agenda, having called for a detailed audit of the state’s finances as the new leadership takes the reins. According to the APC Transition Committee, the outgoing government did not provide either published or unpublished audited financial reports, sparking calls for greater financial transparency as Okpebholo steps into office.
The peaceful and orderly transfer of power reflects Edo State’s commitment to democratic governance and highlights the stability of Nigeria’s political landscape, despite underlying tensions. Notably, Okpebholo’s administration will inherit both the accomplishments and challenges left by Obaseki, including initiatives focused on economic development, education, and healthcare improvements.

The new administration is expected to address various pressing issues in the state while also building on the foundations set by Obaseki to foster growth in Edo’s key sectors.
Okpebholo’s term opens with optimism, as the governor has committed to steering Edo State toward further development. His journey to victory, marked by a decisive win against the PDP and Labour Party candidates, signals public approval for his vision. This support underscores the electorate’s desire for stability and continuous improvement in governance.
The celebratory mood around the inauguration was palpable, and the presence of prominent political figures illustrated a strong endorsement from the federal government and APC affiliates across Nigeria. It also underscored the weight of expectations from Edo’s citizens, who now look to Okpebholo for sustained progress.
