FELABRATION 2024 IN THE UK

Felabration 2024 was nothing short of electrifying. As always, the annual festival celebrating the life and legacy of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was a vivid reflection of music, culture, and activism. From October 14 – October 20 2024, Lagos became the heartbeat of Afrobeat, with fans, artists, and cultural enthusiasts flocking to the New Afrika Shrine to revel in the spirit of Fela.

This year’s edition, themed “Look and Laugh,” saw a lineup of both local and international artists who paid homage to the man whose music has transcended generations and borders.

Fela Kuti was more than a musician—he was a cultural icon whose music fought oppression, colonialism, and corruption. He used his platform to speak truth to power, making him a voice for the voiceless. His songs echoed Nigeria’s socio-political struggles, wrapped in rhythms and melodies that kept people moving.

It’s no wonder that decades after his passing, his music remains as relevant as ever. Felabration, which was founded in 1998 by Fela’s eldest daughter, Yeni Kuti, has since grown into an international event. What began as a simple celebration has grown into a week-long festival showcasing Afrobeat’s legacy and modern influence.

The 2024 Felabration lived up to its hype. From the concerts to the art exhibitions, debates, and the iconic street parade, the atmosphere was charged with excitement. The New Afrika Shrine, as always, was the main stage, and it buzzed with energy as fans packed the venue night after night.

Performers included Femi and Seun Kuti who carried on their father’s legacy with pride, but they weren’t alone. The festival lineup featured a mix of rising stars and established artists like May D, HarrySong, Majeed, Shoday, Made Kuti, and others who have been inspired by Fela’s sound and message.

Felabration is more than just a concert series. It’s an experience that brings together art, music, culture, and activism. Each year, people hold debates and discussions, often tackling the socio-political issues that Fela himself fought against.

A highlight of the 2024 edition was the art exhibition featuring works inspired by Fela’s life, activism, and Afrobeat movement. Bold, colorful pieces captured the essence of the man who was unapologetic in his fight for justice. The street parade, a fan favorite, was lively with dancers, musicians, and fans celebrating Afrobeat culture in the streets. It was a true celebration of Fela’s rebellious spirit, complete with the freedom to express and embrace African identity.

As Felabration continues to grow, the organizers are always looking ahead. The 2024 edition also unveiled plans for next year’s celebration, which promises to be even bigger. Yeni Kuti and the team announced plans for more international collaborations to bring greater global attention to Afrobeat.

Fela

The vision for Felabration goes beyond Nigeria; it’s about creating a worldwide platform for African artists to share their music and message with a global audience. There are also plans to include more community outreach programs, focusing on using music and art to inspire social change, much like Fela did during his time.

Felabration isn’t just for die-hard fans of Fela Kuti. It has become a melting pot of music lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and activists from around the world. Whether you’re there for the music, the art, or the message, there’s something for everyone. And even though Fela himself is no longer with us, his spirit is very much alive, not just in the music but in the people who come together every year to honor his legacy.

In the midst of the colorful chaos that defines Felabration, one thing remains clear: Fela Kuti’s music is more than just sound. It is a tool of resistance, a call to action, and a celebration of freedom. The festival actively preserves and passes on this legacy to future generations instead of letting people just remember it. Afrobeat inspires movements, and Felabration reminds us of music’s power to drive social change.
