Save the Date, See You There!

The event will start from October 29 to November 2, 2025 and will take place in Lagos, Nigeria. Usually, the main runway shows will light up the Federal Palace Hotel grounds in Victoria Island and other events might touch several parts of the city. Ranging from small exhibitions to designer presentations and workshops. It is held once every year and has become a defining feature in the Nigerian creative calendar. Think of it as Lagos’ answer to Paris or New York Fashion Week, but with a distinctly African rhythm, color and flair.

What’s the Story Behind Omoyemi Akerele

Lagos Fashion Week was founded by Omoyemi Akerele. She was a former lawyer who turned fashion consultant and the powerhouse behind Style House Files. A creative development agency that champions African fashion on a global scale.

Omoyemi Akerele

Omoyemi’s story is an inspiring one. With her experience and observation in the fashion industry, and seeing Nigeria’s talent with little infrastructure to support their dreams, she thought of doing something transformative. In 2011, she launched the first edition of Lagos Fashion Week with one goal: “to create a platform that connects African designers to the global fashion economy”.

Over the years, her vision has grown into one of Africa’s most respected fashion events drawing buyers, media, influencers and creatives from across the world. Lagos Fashion Week has since helped position Nigeria, and Africa at large, as a serious player in the global fashion conversation.

Our Journey in Numbers

Since it all started in 2011, Lagos Fashion Week has made new records for African fashion. Though their beginning was small, it now attracts designers from around the continent. It has grown into a global stage that exhibits the magnificence of African design. Designers like Lisa Folawiyo, Orange Culture, Mai Atafo, Lanre DaSilva Ajayi and Tokyo James have all graced its runways. Every  version brings new things about what’s next in African fashion combining traditional craftsmanship with futuristic creativity.

Past records show that it has become more than just runway shows. It also features talk sessions, business masterclasses, fashion film screenings and even sustainability exhibitions. For example, in 2024 emphasis was on the growing significance of eco-conscious design and circular fashion systems.

Innovation and Sustainability: The New Dimension

Fundamentally, Lagos Fashion Week is not just about clothes and fabrics, it’s about impact. One of their drives and achievements is the Green Access program. This is a sustainability focused accelerator established to support upcoming African designers who are enthusiastic about ethical and environmentally responsible fashion.

Through Green Access participants get mentorship, business training and an avenue to exhibit collections created from reused or sustainable materials. This is beyond fashion. It is a push toward a more responsible creative industry.

Focusing on sustainability, innovation and inclusivity obviously makes Lagos Fashion Week unique from other fashion events on the continent. It shows that Africa’s fashion story is not just following patterns, it’s setting them.

Young Nigerian Designers Take Home

For upcoming designers in Nigeria, Lagos Fashion Week is a must grab opportunity. Beyond exhibiting their collection, it’s about gaining exposure, learning and connecting.

The main objective of the event is to train new talent. Programs like Fashion Focus Africa offer mentorship, financial empowerment and access to global trade. Some established Nigerian designers have benefited from  this platform.

For an upcoming designer, this is the avenue where dreams turn into reality. A place to meet buyers, stylists and editors who can take your brand and products to the next level. Also, the networking is beyond imagination.

Conclusion

Lagos Fashion Week has transformed into more than a fashion exhibition, it is a cultural movement. It celebrates identity, craftsmanship and innovation while pushing African fashion toward a more sustainable future.

In a world that is finally paying attention to different stories and authentic voices, Lagos Fashion Week stands as a reminder that Africa does not just contribute to global fashion, but defines it.

So in short: If you’re planning for LFW 2025, mark October 29 – November 2 on your calendar. Know that it’s been running since 2011, founded by Omoyemi Akerele and delivered by Style House Files.

For a young designer it offers runway, exposure, trade opportunities, talent accelerators (like Green Access), and a curriculum that aligns with sustainability and innovation. And most importantly this is not just another fashion show, it’s a gateway for African creativity to the world.
