In a closely watched civil trial, mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor was found liable for assault by an Irish High Court jury. The case, centered around allegations of rape and assault in 2018, resulted in McGregor being ordered to pay €250,000 ($257,000) to the plaintiff, Nikita Hand. The verdict, reached after six hours of deliberation, has generated significant public interest due to McGregor’s prominence as a former UFC star.
The allegations stemmed from an incident on December 9, 2018, at a Dublin hotel penthouse following a night of socializing. Hand claimed that the encounter with McGregor began consensually but quickly escalated into violence. She alleged that the fighter, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, attacked her after she rejected his advances.
According to Hand’s testimony, she had explicitly told McGregor she did not wish to engage in sexual activity. Despite her protests, she claimed she was pinned down and choked. Hand called the experience terrifying, saying McGregor made chilling remarks likening her ordeal to his octagon defeats.
Her account painted a harrowing picture of physical and emotional abuse.
