World Book Day, celebrated annually on April 23rd, promotes the joy of reading and a love for books for all ages. Since 1995, over 100 countries and millions of readers have joined in celebrating the written word.
Accordingly, originating from UNESCO’s idea of honouring authors and literature worldwide, World Book Day was first celebrated in 1995. Since then, it has become a valued custom in many countries, with various events and activities organised to mark the occasion.
World Book Day aims to inspire children to read. Schools and libraries host book fairs, reading sessions, and storytelling events, sparking imagination and fostering lifelong reading habits.
The day is for all ages. From classics to bestsellers, poetry to non-fiction, books offer insights, entertainment, and inspiration.
In today’s digital age, World Book Day reminds us of the value of physical books. Holding a book, turning its pages, and immersing in its story offers a unique, magical experience.
Books bridge gaps, connect cultures, and foster understanding. They help us explore diverse perspectives, empathize with different characters, and gain insight into unfamiliar worlds. In today’s interconnected world, this empathy is more important than ever.
World Book Day also honors writers whose creativity brings stories to life. In Nigeria, we celebrate authors like Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Their words spark conversations, challenge norms, and leave a lasting legacy across generations, enriching our shared culture.
