Have we now come to the point where we prioritise entertainment over welfare? What happens when a legend like Hanks Anuku, who has entertained us with his talent and charisma, is struggling behind the scenes? Do we turn a blind eye to his struggles, ignoring the very real challenges he faces? What happens when the curtain falls, and the applause fades away? Do our beloved actors become invisible?
Accordingly, the Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, has grown exponentially over the years, producing talented actors who have captivated audiences with their exceptional skills. However, behind the glamour and glitz, some of these actors are struggling with various challenges, including health issues, financial difficulties, and mental health problems. It is imperative that we, as a community, come together to support our vulnerable actors, ensuring they receive the care and assistance they need.
One notable example is Hanks Anuku, a veteran actor who has been open about his struggles with HIV and mental health. Anuku’s courage in sharing his story has helped raise awareness about the importance of health support and mental wellness in the industry. Recently, a viral video showed him acting erratically, sparking concerns about his mental health. However, Anuku clarified that the video was a scene from a movie he was working on, and not a reflection of his real-life mental health. This incident highlights the need for mental health awareness and support in the industry.

In addition, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has taken some steps to address these issues, but more needs to be done. The guild has provided financial assistance to some ailing actors and organized workshops on health and wellness. However, a more comprehensive approach is required, involving the entire industry and beyond.
Therefore, we propose the establishment of a Nollywood Actors’ Support Fund, dedicated to providing financial assistance, medical care, and mental health support to vulnerable actors. This fund would be managed by a board comprising industry professionals, healthcare experts, and mental health specialists. The fund would provide financial assistance for medical bills, therapy sessions, and other essential expenses. It would also offer mental health support, including counseling and therapy sessions, to help actors cope with the pressures of the industry.

Furthermore, we recommend the creation of a mentorship program, pairing experienced actors with younger ones, to provide guidance and support. This program would help foster a sense of community and shared responsibility, ensuring that no actor feels isolated or alone in their struggles.
Moreover, we suggest the establishment of a Nollywood Actors’ Health Insurance Scheme, providing affordable health insurance coverage for actors. This scheme would ensure that actors receive timely medical attention, reducing the risk of complications and improving their overall well-being.
Finally, it is our collective responsibility to support Nollywood’s vulnerable actors. We must come together to create a safety net that ensures our talented actors receive the care they need. By doing so, we can build a stronger, more compassionate industry that prioritizes the well-being of its members. Let us rally behind our ailing actors, including Hanks Anuku, and demonstrate our love and appreciation for their contributions to Nollywood. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for our beloved actors.

Nollywood makes a lot of sense
Why would they despise Hanks? At his age, 60+, everyone should look up to him for his striking qualities. Hanks is a brand and we must uphold it.
Everyone is in competition with no one because there is no reason to compete with anyone. The actors guild is a shadow of itself.
The situation needs to be salvaged
The dynamism of human nature tends to favour the evil side
Nollywood is definitely underrated and actors deserve more. This is a good read definitely.
My view is simple. Those who tirelessly entertain us must and should be protected. They are the reason most people with HBP are still alive! To neglect them is to reject what they stand for.
