After my second attempt at the JAMB Examination in 2009, I felt assured about scaling through the post UTME phase, especially given my aspiration to pursue Mass Communication. However, the introduction of the computer-Based Testing (CBT) system by JAMB brought forth unforeseen challenges. Despite my thorough preparation (as I thought) and familiarity with past questions, I overlooked researching the intricacies of the CBT exam process.
As I journeyed to Kwara State for the exam, I was already envisioning myself as the newest undergraduate at the University of Ilorin, well-versed in the tales and atmosphere of Tanke and Ilorin. However, my confidence wavered when the exam commenced. Contrary to my expectations of art-related questions, I was confronted with physics and science inquiries. The unfamiliar territory left me flustered, despite sitting in the cool breeze of the examination hall.
With each passing minute, I grappled with the realisation that my time was slipping away as I attempted to comprehend the unexpected science questions. Despite the odds, I managed to salvage some marks, albeit with a sense of urgency and panic overshadowing my performance.
Reflecting on the experience, I realised the importance of thorough research and understanding of the examination format. Had I sought deeper into the CBT process, I would have been better prepared for the diverse range of questions presented to me and avoided siting for a JAMB a year later.

Fast forward to the recent release of the examination results by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in 2024, and it became evident that many students struggled, mirroring my challenges. This setback served as a poignant reminder of my past experience, where inadequate preparation cost me a chance at admission in 2009 at the University of Ilorin.
Thus, this article serves as a testament to the importance of meticulous preparation for entrance examinations at all levels. Whether as a high school graduate aspiring for university education or a graduate aiming for advanced studies, the journey to success in entrance exams demands thoroughness and adaptability to the evolving examination system. Through sharing my personal journey, I hope to equip others with the insights and strategies necessary to ace their entrance examinations and secure their desired academic pursuits.

First, comprehend the Examination Structure
The primary stride in your preparation entails acquainting yourself with the examination layout. Acquiring familiarity with the exam framework can substantially mitigate anxiety and enhance your performance.
Second, investigate the Structure: Identify the various segments of the exam and the nature of inquiries posed. For instance, the GRE encompasses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing sections, each exhibiting distinct formats.
Third, discern the Sections and Their Weightage: Determine which sections carry more significance to allocate your study time judiciously. For instance, in the SAT, the math section constitutes half of the total score.
Fourth, review Past Papers and Sample Questions: Engaging with prior exams or sample questions offers insight into the exam’s difficulty level and structure. Research indicates that candidates who practice with past papers are 30% more likely to enhance their scores.
Fifth, craft a Study Schedule: A meticulously structured study plan is imperative for effective preparation. It fosters organization and ensures comprehensive coverage of all requisite material.
Let us also consider other important guides to ace our entrance examination
Let us start with creating a realistic timetable as it is essential for effective study planning. Segmenting study time into manageable units and focusing on different subjects or sections each day can significantly improve outcomes, with studies indicating that adhering to a study schedule increases the likelihood of higher scores by 25%. Allocating time for each section based on its importance and individual proficiency ensures balanced preparation, enabling candidates to optimize their strengths while addressing weaknesses. Furthermore, setting short-term and long-term objectives, such as daily and weekly goals, not only helps monitor progress but also sustains motivation, as evidenced by surveys showing that 80% of successful test-takers had established and achieved specific study objectives.
Furthermore, choosing appropriate resources is paramount for effective preparation. Opting for reliable textbooks and online sources, such as “The Official Guide to the GRE” by ETS, endorsed by educators and past test-takers, ensures quality study materials. Employing practice tests and flashcards aids in reinforcing memory and comprehension, with research indicating a potential 15% score increase for candidates utilizing flashcards. Considering engagement in study groups or forums, like Reddit’s r/GradSchool and The Student Room, provides valuable community support and fresh perspectives, enhancing the interactive studying experience.
In addition, effective time management is crucial for both exam preparation and performance. Undertaking timed practice sessions, as recommended by the Princeton Review, can improve speed and accuracy, potentially boosting scores by up to 20%. Learning to prioritize queries during the exam, starting with confident answers, is endorsed by test preparation firms like Kaplan. Additionally, formulating strategies for challenging questions, such as making educated guesses or revisiting them later, can enhance overall performance, as suggested by research findings
However, prioritising your well-being physical and mental wellness are essential for exam readiness. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle, including regular physical activity, contributes to heightened cognitive function and stress reduction, as evidenced by research from the American College Health Association linking exercise to higher GPAs. Adequate rest and stress management are equally vital, with the National Sleep Foundation highlighting the academic benefits of obtaining at least eight hours of sleep. Incorporating relaxation and leisure activities into one’s schedule helps prevent exhaustion and enhances focus and productivity, as indicated by studies in mental health.
