Christmas is almost here, and if you’re like most people, you’ve probably already started planning your holiday wardrobe. But, let’s face it—the prices out there are enough to make you question your whole life. That fine shirt you spotted for N5k last week? It’s now N10k, and the Igbo man selling it is telling you, “Aunty, it’s Nigeria oh. Things are going up this Christmas, my gain inside is just 500 naira.” And without that shirt, your outfit for detty December is not complete. Or maybe you’re on the hunt for that perfect pair of black pants, but the prices are making you want to scream.
Thankfully, you don’t have to spend your entire life savings to look fly this Christmas. Let me introduce you to the Fine Art of Thrifting.
The Fine Art of Thrifting
Thrifting isn’t new, but it’s definitely becoming a stylish go-to. In Na Mumu Dey Go Boutique, the author traces the history of thrifting in Nigeria all the way back to the 15th century when Europeans introduced Western clothes. Over time, thrifted clothes, once affectionately called “Okrika” (named after Okrika town in Rivers State), have become a staple part of Nigerian fashion. You’d also hear them being called “Bend Down Select”, owing to the fact that they are typically displayed on the floor.
Thrifted clothes, or “pre-loved” clothes, aren’t what you might think. If you grew up in Nigeria, chances are you’ve worn them—and you can testify that there are levels to thrifted fashion. From first-grade pieces with tags still on to more affordable options, thrifted items can elevate your style without breaking the bank. It’s not just clothes, either; everything from shoes to bags to household utensils can be thrifted.
Over the years, thrifting has evolved from the traditional Bend Down Select markets to sleek, curated physical thrift stores and online shops. And of course, the rebranding from “Okrika” to “Thrift” has come with higher price tags. Social media users often joke, “Okrika was very affordable till you people started calling it thrift.”
For Gen Zs, thrifted pieces are now a fashion statement. The adoption of Alte fashion has made thrifted oversized jeans, combat boots, and other unique pieces must-haves for stylish wardrobes. With higher demand, prices have gone up, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find great deals if you know where to look.
To help you get started, let me introduce you to someone who’s mastered the Fine Art of Thrifting: Laju, the Thrifting Expert.
Meet Laju: A Thrifting Fashionista
Laju is a fashion enthusiast and entrepreneur with an eye for quality thrifted finds. Her love for thrifting began early, thanks to her mom, who taught her the value of unique, affordable fashion. As Laju puts it, “My mom taught me that thrifted clothes are unique, and you can get different styles on a budget.”
As Laju grew older, her mom introduced her to trusted thrift vendors, and she also developed her own eye for spotting amazing thrift finds. Her personal style is best described as “Sophisticated, Heavy, and Unique,” and she’s all about accessories. As she says, “Without accessories, it’s just a regular white shirt and black pants.”
Laju’s Guide to Thrifting
If you want to nail the thrift game and look fabulous without spending a fortune, Laju’s got you covered. Here are her expert tips:
- Know How to Price: Vendors often hike prices for “big girls,” but Laju says, “If they go high, you go low.” Don’t be afraid to negotiate!
- Know Where to Shop: In Lagos, popular thrift markets include Yaba, Katangura, and Idumota. For other locations, check TikTok or YouTube for recommendations.
- Go Early and on Market Days: Go early, especially on market days, and you’ll find the best deals before the crowds arrive. In Lagos, that would be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, depending on the market.
- Check for Quality: Look for first-grade pieces, inspect for stains, loose seams, and fading. According to Laju, “Be into the whole thing. Check the cloth as if you’re checking a new TV you want to buy.” If you’re willing to put in the effort, you can snag amazing pieces that look brand new.
- Know Your Size: Always know your measurements, and if possible, carry a tape rule to the market. “I always take my tape rule with me to the market. I have three—one’s always in my wallet,” she shares.
- Don’t Let Vendors Cajole You: Be sure of what you want and stick to it.
Laju’s Go-To Styling Tips
When it comes to styling, Laju believes in mixing thrifted pieces with what you already own. “Fashion isn’t new; it’s about styling it your way,” she says. Here are her tips for making thrifted pieces look high-end:

- Accessorize: Add rings, scarves, or a stylish pair of shoes to elevate your look.
- Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles. Even basic thrifted pieces can be transformed with a little creativity.
- Be Confident: The key to looking great is confidence. When you wear thrifted items with pride, you’ll slay effortlessly!
