In a closely fought contest, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) scraped a 1-0 victory against Girona, thanks to a last-minute own goal by Girona’s goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga. The game, which took place at the Parc des Princes, was far from the comfortable win PSG might have anticipated. Despite controlling possession and bombarding Girona’s defense, it took an unfortunate error from the visitors in the dying moments of the match to hand Paris all three points.
Right from the outset, Paris dominated the game, controlling the ball and attempting to create opportunities. Girona, however, came prepared. Their defensive strategy was well-executed, with their backline keeping PSG’s attackers at bay for much of the match. Led by Gazzaniga, Girona’s defense was both organized and resolute. They absorbed wave after wave of PSG’s attacks, frustrating the home side and reducing their chances of finding the back of the net.
PSG, known for their attacking prowess with players like Ousmane Dembélé, Marco Asensio, and Bradley Barcola, were expected to put on an offensive show. However, Girona’s compact defense meant that clear chances were hard to come by. Dembélé, in particular, found himself stifled by Girona’s disciplined marking, while Asensio and Barcola struggled to make their usual impact in the final third.
For much of the first half, PSG’s dominance in possession—over 60%—didn’t translate into genuine threats on goal. Girona’s defense limited the Parisian side to speculative long-range efforts and blocked numerous shots before they could reach the target. Gazzaniga’s sharp reactions kept PSG from capitalizing on the few chances they did create. Despite the disparity in possession, PSG went into halftime without any reward for their efforts.
Girona, meanwhile, were not merely passive. Though primarily focused on defense, they sporadically looked to catch Paris on the counterattack. With quick transitions and direct passes, Girona managed to venture forward and challenge PSG’s defense. However, they found it equally difficult to break down the Parisian backline, and their few attempts on goal were comfortably dealt with by PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.
As the second half wore on, the pressure began to build on PSG. Luis Enrique’s men grew increasingly frustrated as they pushed for a breakthrough, but Girona’s defense held firm. The home crowd grew restless as PSG’s offensive efforts seemed to fizzle out time and again. Substitutions were made to inject more creativity and pace, but Girona remained resilient, soaking up the pressure and clearing their lines effectively.
Girona’s defense was well-organized and committed, but fatigue started to set in during the latter stages of the match. As PSG kept pushing forward, Girona began to show signs of wear, retreating deeper into their half. The visitors, perhaps sensing they could snatch a point from the French champions, became even more cautious, committing fewer players forward and focusing entirely on defending.
It wasn’t until the final moments of the game that the deadlock was broken. In the 90th minute, PSG’s persistence paid off, though not in the way anyone expected. A cross into the Girona box led to chaos, and Gazzaniga, who had been solid throughout the match, made a critical error. Attempting to clear the ball, the Girona goalkeeper mishandled it, sending it into his own net. The own goal stunned Girona and sent the PSG fans into raptures, as the long-awaited breakthrough finally arrived.
While PSG celebrated, it was clear that this victory was far from their best performance. Girona, though ultimately defeated, could hold their heads high after an impressive defensive display. They had come to Paris as the underdogs but managed to frustrate one of Europe’s most potent attacking teams for nearly the entire match. Unfortunately for Girona, one moment of misfortune undid all their hard work, and they left the Parc des Princes empty-handed.
For PSG, the win was a relief, even if it wasn’t achieved in the most convincing manner. Luis Enrique will undoubtedly feel that his side should have done more with their dominance in possession and chances created. Despite taking all three points, PSG’s struggles to break down Girona’s defense will be a concern going forward. However, the team will take solace in the fact that they found a way to win, even when not at their best, which is often the mark of champions.
As for Girona, their brave resistance will earn them plaudits, even in defeat. They came within minutes of securing an invaluable point in one of the toughest arenas in Europe. While the result was a bitter pill to swallow, their defensive organization and resilience showed that they can compete at this level. If they can maintain this level of performance, they have every reason to believe they can achieve success in the competition.
In the end, PSG’s late fortune was the difference between the two sides. Girona faltered at the most crucial moment, and PSG took advantage to secure a 1-0 win. Though the scoreline may suggest a narrow victory, the performance highlighted PSG’s challenges and Girona’s ability to punch above their weight.
